Why we do not just add refrigerant
An A/C system is sealed. If it is low, it has a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak gets you a few cool weeks at best. We check pressures, look for leaks, and repair the leak before recharging to the amount your system is designed to hold. Overcharging is as bad for the compressor as undercharging.
Heater and defroster problems
Your heater uses engine coolant, so a cold heater is often a cooling system issue: low coolant, a stuck thermostat or air trapped in the system. A clogged or leaking heater core can cause weak heat, a sweet smell, a greasy film on the windshield or a wet floor. The defroster also uses the A/C to dry the air, which is why a working A/C matters in winter too.

How often does car A/C need to be recharged?
It should not need regular recharging. If it keeps losing its cool, there is a leak that needs repair.
Why does my A/C smell musty?
Moisture on the evaporator lets mold and bacteria grow, and a dirty cabin air filter adds to it. A new filter and an evaporator cleaning usually help.
Why does my heat only work when driving?
Usually low coolant, air in the cooling system, or a weak water pump. At idle there is not enough flow through the heater core.
