CV axle, differential & 4x4 repair in Elizabethtown, PA

The drivetrain gets power from the transmission to the wheels. Clicks when turning, clunks when shifting or a vibration at speed usually point here, and we track down which part is worn.

Signs it is time

  • Clicking or popping when turning (CV joint)
  • Grease sprayed on the inside of a wheel (torn CV boot)
  • Clunk when shifting into drive or reverse
  • Vibration that grows with speed
  • Whine or howl that changes with speed, not engine RPM
  • 4WD light flashing or 4WD will not engage

CV boots: small part, big savings

A CV joint is packed in grease and sealed by a rubber boot. Once the boot tears, water and road grit get in and the joint wears quickly. Catching a torn boot early can mean a simpler repair. Once the joint clicks, it is time for a new axle.

Trucks, SUVs and AWD

Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles have extra gearboxes: front and rear differentials and a transfer case or power take-off unit. Each has its own fluid, and those fluids are often skipped. Differential and transfer case service is a common reason 4x4s get noisy or struggle to engage.

AWD systems can also be sensitive to tire sizes. Mismatched tires on an AWD vehicle can strain the system, so ask us before replacing only one or two. See our tires page.

Vibrations: finding the source

A vibration at highway speed can come from tire balance, a bent wheel, a worn U-joint, a failing center bearing or a bad CV axle. We road test, check balance and inspect the driveline to find the actual source instead of guessing.

CV Axle, Differential & 4x4 FAQ

How long can I drive with a clicking CV axle?

Not indefinitely. A worn joint gets louder and can eventually fail and leave the car unable to move. Have it checked soon.

Do differentials need fluid changes?

Yes. Intervals vary by vehicle and are shorter if you tow or drive off-road. Your owner’s manual lists them, or we can check the fluid condition.

Why does my truck clunk when I shift into gear?

Common causes are worn U-joints, excess play in the differential, worn motor or transmission mounts, or a dry driveshaft slip yoke. We inspect the driveline to pin it down.
