Starter & alternator repair in Elizabethtown, PA
The starter cranks the engine and the alternator keeps the battery charged while you drive. When either fails, the car does not go anywhere. We test the whole starting and charging system so you replace only what failed.
Signs it is time
- Single click or rapid clicking when you turn the key
- Slow, labored cranking
- Battery or charging warning light on while driving
- Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev
- Whining or grinding from the front of the engine
- New battery died within days
Battery, starter or alternator?
The three are easy to confuse. A weak battery cranks slowly. A failing starter often clicks without cranking, or grinds. A failing alternator lets the battery drain while you drive, so the car may start fine and then die on the road with a battery light on.
We load-test all three before recommending anything. Many people replace a battery when the alternator is the problem, then end up stranded again a week later.
Cold mornings expose weak parts
Cold weather thickens engine oil and cuts battery output at the same time, so the starter has to work harder with less power. A starter or battery that was borderline in October often gives out on the first single-digit morning in January. A quick test in the fall is a good idea. See our winter car prep guide.
Stuck and cannot get in?
If the car will not start, a jump or a tow gets it to us. We test the battery, starter and alternator together so you replace only the part that failed.

Starter & Alternator FAQ
How do I know if it is my alternator?
A battery light while driving, dimming lights, electrical accessories acting up and a battery that keeps going flat after a jump are all signs. A charging system test confirms it.
Can a bad alternator ruin a new battery?
It can. An alternator that undercharges leaves the battery deeply discharged, which shortens its life. One that overcharges can damage the battery too.
Why does my car click but not start?
Rapid clicking usually means low battery voltage. A single loud click often points to the starter or its connections. We test to be sure.
