Check engine light diagnostics in Elizabethtown, PA
A code tells us where to start looking, not what to replace. We scan the computer, test the parts behind the code and tell you what is actually wrong before any work begins.
Signs it is time
- Check engine light on steady
- Check engine light flashing (pull over and have it looked at soon)
- Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power
- Worse fuel mileage than usual
- Smell of fuel or rotten eggs
Why a free code read is not a diagnosis
Parts stores will read a code for free, and that is useful. But a code like P0171 (system too lean) can come from a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or a bad injector. Replacing the part named in a code search is how people spend money twice.
We use the code as the starting point, then test. That means looking at live data, checking for leaks, measuring voltage and resistance, and confirming the fault before we recommend a part.
Steady light vs. flashing light
A steady light means the computer found a fault that should be checked soon. The car is usually safe to drive to the shop.
A flashing light usually means an active misfire that can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration, and get it in as soon as you can. If the car is running badly, call us before driving it further.
Common causes we find

- EGR and evaporative valve faults

Check Engine Light & Diagnostics FAQ
Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?
If it is steady and the car drives normally, usually yes for a short time, but have it checked soon. If it is flashing, or the car is running rough, overheating or losing power, drive as little as possible and call us.
Will the light go off by itself?
Sometimes. A loose gas cap, for example, can clear after several drive cycles once tightened. The code stays in memory, and if the fault comes back so will the light.
Do you just clear the code?
No. Clearing a code without fixing the cause only hides the problem. We find the cause, fix it with your approval, then clear the code and confirm it stays off.
Do you work on all makes?
Yes. Domestic, Asian and European cars, trucks and SUVs.
